Empowering the Next Generation to Promote Accurate Portrayals of Mental Health in Storytelling


Generation Next TEAM Up California

The Generation Next California competition was a well-rounded success! This unique project encouraged California college, university and community college students studying film and television, journalism and social media to create compelling and accurate stories about persons living with mental illness, their recovery and wellness. In addition, the program offered curricular resources and support for the faculty members.

Winners received esteemed recognition at the 18th Annual PRISM Awards ceremony; exclusive mentoring sessions with entertainment, journalism and social media professionals, as well as mental health experts; student productions aired on EICnetwork.tv, a global internet television network; and much more!

Generation Next is led by the Entertainment Industries Council Inc. and is supported by the California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA), an organization of county governments working to improve mental health among Californians. Prevention and early intervention programs implemented by CalMHSA are funded by counties through the voter-approved Mental Health Services Act (Prop. 63).

TEAM Up (Tools for Entertainment And Media) is a statewide project that brings together mental health experts, entertainment industry professionals and journalists to encourage deeper reporting and accurate depictions of people, and their families, living with mental illness.

Entertainment Industries Council, Inc. (EIC) is a nonprofit corporation that, since 1983, has collaborated with the entertainment community and news media to promote health and social issues using the power and influence of the media.

Generation Next is a competition for Southwestern Pennsylvania college students studying film, television and video, journalism and social media to create accurate stories about persons living with mental illness, their recovery and wellness. For faculty, the program offers curricular resources and support.

Generation Next’s highlights include recognition at the 2014 Southwestern Pennsylvania Awards ceremony; mentoring sessions with entertainment, journalism and social media professionals, as well as mental health experts; student productions aired on EICnetwork.tv, a global internet television network; and stipends for participating faculty.
