Depicting Mental Health
Character & Storyline Development |
What is Mental Illness?
A diagnosis of mental illness is made by professionals using validated indicators of psychological distress and impairment due to emotional problems. In common terms, mental illness can be understood as psychological distress that impairs everyday activities including work, chores, social lives, and relationships. What is the difference between Mental Health and Mental Illness? According to the World Health Organization, mental health is not just the absence of mental disorder. It is defined as “a state of well-being in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.”

EIC hosted Mental Health for Storytellers: A First Draft Creative Briefing at Universal Studios, Hollywood with support from the Mental Health Services Act (Prop. 63). At this briefing EIC provided writers, producers, actors, and television executives with access to personal stories and experiences of mental health experts and individuals with lived experience. Dr. Charles Sophy surveyed the world of psychology and treatment for mental health challenges; Stephanie Welch told of her own challenges with mental illness and how it led her into a career in mental health advocacy at the California Mental Health Services Authority (CalMHSA); Lisa Becker discussed her battles with bipolar disorder; and Lisa and Griffen Moskowitz discussed the effects that an eating disorder has had on their relationship as mother and daughter. This newsletter provides you with discussion highlights from the briefing as well as suggestions for the integration of topics related to mental health and mental illness into your character and storyline development. We encourage you to utilize our First Draft Services for more information on this topic and direct access to experts.
